But Tom’s break-through “side hustle” was a 4-month paid internship that he took with a local digital marketing company.
Tom had already begun to doubt that he wanted to spend a career in social service. But his internship sealed the deal. He quickly learned that he had more of a passion (and aptitude) for online business. Thankfully, the company that Tom was interning with offered him a full-time contractor position after his internship.
Paid internships are a school requirement in Canada (where Tom lives). But even if you aren’t required to take an internship at your university, you should try to find one. It could go a long way towards helping you find your career “sweet spot.”
